All Local Chairmen and
Lodge Secretaries,

Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen,
Union Pacific Railroad (ED)

Dear Sirs and Brothers:

Attached find copy of instructions put out
to division superintendents over the signature
of Mr. J. T. Singent.

The instructions are self-explanatory and
resulted from a vigorous protest on the part of
the undersigned when a crew dispatcher auto-
matically placed a yardman on the mark-up at
termination of his scheduled vacation period
when the individual desired to take a few days
off in addition to his vacation.

In the future it will be necessary for
employes to okay for service when ready to resume
service following vacation, regardless of whether
additional time is taken.

This for your information.

Fraternally yours,

/s/ J. H. Shepherd
General Chairman,
B. of R. T.
Union Pacific-
Eastern District

Mr. T.  F. Shanahan - Omaha

Mr, C.  J. Colombo - Cheyenne

Mr. K.  B. Jopling - Kansas City

(CC - Mr. O. A, Durrant - Cheyenne

Mr. C. T. Alford - Denver   )

Claim was recently submitted to this office
because a yardman was automatically placed on the
board by crew dispatcher at the conclusion of his
vacation, however, it developed that the individ-
ual desired to take additional time and there was
at that time sufficient men on the extra board to
protect the service.

In order to have a uniform application it
will be understood that at any time an employe is
off account vacation, leave of absence, sickness,
etc., he must advise the proper party when he
desires to again resume duty.

This understanding, of course, will have no
effect on an employe being required to secure a
proper leave of absence when necessary.
